Ractopamine Hydrochloride has been added to U.S. pork since 1999.

It’s a steroid given to pigs 20 to 40 days before their slaughter. It redirects nutrients to build muscle.

More muscle = More $$$

No long term studies have identified the effects of ractopamine.

Ractopamine acts on the cardiovascular system, there are concerns that consuming residues could cause tachycardia (racing heart), headaches, or tremors in sensitive individuals.

Yikes.
